Cooperation between the LVR-Anna-Freud-Schule and Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne

Since September 2004 there has been a cooperation between the two institutions  with the focus on the communication of and reflection on the medium of photography in the classroom and school. From the start a long-term working period was envisaged, not just selective elements within the curriculum, but regular integration into various teaching and school concerns. Originally regarded as an experiment, cooperation between the school and the cultural institution is now carried out frequently. The general aim of the LVR-Anna-Freud-Schule and Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur was to introduce photography as a medium for teaching and learning: a cross-subject approach which also involves the members of the teaching staff. In this regard, the so called „Photo A“, a workshop which takes place regularly in the school is an important element. As an external location Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur with its sequence of exhibitions of art photography has established itself in many respects. During the past years numerous visits to the exhibitions were organised. In their encounters with artistic works in specially-organised events, pupils have made varying experiences, they discover surprising points of perspectives and new themes, learn about the composition and form of pictures, make free associations and can ultimately reflect upon themselves. "

Photography in School. August Sander – Sich zur Schau stellen" ("Presenting Yourself“) the first interdisciplinary project aimed across all age groups and school subjects took place in 2011. Based on the photo "Circus People, 1926-1932" by August Sander – whose archive is the central element of the collection of Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur – issues related to the picture were dealt with in various classes and then developed creatively. In 2013 the project was awarded the first education prize presented by the German Photographic Association. This was an important acknowledgement for the LVR-Anna-Freud-Schule and Die Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur.

The prize money was invested in the second comprehensive project "Lebensraum Schule" ("Living Space School") for the production of a large-scale image of a historic classroom, which was a central element of the project. In addition to specialist classes and the teaching staff, everyone involved in the school was encouraged to contribute. The preferred medium was to be photography, but contributions in the form of texts were also included. The inspiration was a photograph of the reconstruction of a historic classroom from around the end of the 19th century located in the School Museum in Bergisch Gladbach. The black and white image was enlarged and hung in the dining hall of the LVR-Anna-Freud-Schule, so that it was visible at all times and even became part of school life. The contributions were presented in a booklet. The school building was focused on in a great number of different, highly-creative ways. Rooms were investigated as regards their function, and the possibilities they offered for individual development, for learning and for life.
